This is the fourth James Bond movie in the series but the ninth book. The previous movies were Dr No, From Russia with Love, and Goldfinger. It looks like it was the template that all other Bond movies followed. One outstanding point of the movie is the suave bad guy, Largo. Many of the more recent Bond bad guys are played for laughs. Their characters are portrayed simple raving madmen, it is hard to hold any credibility. On the other hand, Thunderball's Largo acts like blowing up the world is only business.
