The Spy Who Loved Me was the transition from a series of spy story to full blown movie franchise. I mean franchise in the bad sense of the word. The movie has all the elements of an action movie checked off like from a list. Maniacal bad guy, check. Love/Hate relationship, check. lots of car chases and explosions, check.
You known it is going to be tacky when secret service agent Bond escapes with a Union Jack parachute.
The producers of the movie only used the Ian Fleming name. The Spy Who Loved Me book was told in first person by woman who encountered Bond. The book is split into three parts. Me, Them, and Him. Ian Fleming wrote it because he was bothered by people idolizing Bond. He wanted to convey Bond as a brutal character. Fleming ultimately view the book as a failure and only optioned the book if the story was completely different.
