In the 1970, Hollywood felt it had lost touch with its audience and decided to hire a group of young film makers. This is document intriguingly well in the book "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls". Many of the film makers considered themselves the next Orson Welles so they choose to make a 1970 take on an earlier genre. For example, the screwball 1940's "Bring up Baby" was remade into "What's up Doc" with uneven results. Producer Robert Evans produced a updated film noir based on historical Los Angeles. He hired Polish Roman Polanski to direct. The resulting movie, "Chinatown" is considered one of the best noirs and one of the best american movies of all time. It uncompromisingly complex plot, its mood, and its performances set it apart from others. It is one of the few movies that the over the top actor, Jack Nicholson, manages to disappear in the role.
