At the beginning of the film,a man sits at a office dictaphone. He leaves a memo to a co-worker: "Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money and for a woman. I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Pretty, isn't it?"It is the start of one of the three classic film noirs. Like all film noirs, the characters in Double Indemnity inhabit a world that seems to be against them. It doesn't matter how smart or witty they are, they feel helpless.
There are so outstanding elements to this film. the main actor, Fred MacMurray, playing against type by being unlikable. The supporting actor, Edward G Robbinson, playing against type by being a good person. Billy Wilder's Dialog. The cool way they light cigarettes. Once you watch the film, you will start seeing its influence on later crime movies.
