In memorial to Kirk Douglas, we are seeing him in the 1952 "The Bad and the Beautiful".
He stars the the central character who is a ruthless Hollywood movie producer. Very similar to "Citizen Kane" his story is told through flashbacks of several people that knew him.
From the four different versions of "A Star is Born" to "La La Land", Hollywood loves to talk about itself and build up its own myth. However, the movie making part of the story is usually in the background. In "The Bad and the Beautiful", it front and center. The producer has to solve the problem of having no money for costumes. This situation really happened on the the set of "Cat People"
There is a hard edge in this movie compared to others movies about Hollywood. Douglas' character does not are about others. He is a force of nature that will carry others along if they do not resist.
This is different than a mephistophelian character like Lermontov in the "Red Shoes". In the "Red Shoes" (maybe coming) Lermontov is only willing to train dancers who are willing to commit body and soul to their art. Once he has chosen, he himself is committed to bringing out the best in the person.
