The 1984 movie is directed by Scottish film maker Bill Forsythe who burst on the independent film scene with the movie "Local Hero" The movie was not only slow paced and had no plot, it was movie that launched a thousand other movies consisting of only quaint rural folks we can laugh at. "Local Hero" can say it was not ridiculing rural folks because it portrayed the big oil company as evil. Even more curious is that the local hero of the title is an antisocial biker who drives his motorcycle dangerously fast through town.
On the other hand, "Comfort and Joy" has a base plot of a man who has to reinvent himself after his girl friend leaves him around Christmas. He gets involved in a war of competing ice cream tycoons. He constantly has to warn "Mr Bunny" of eminent danger. All of the people around him are thinking of the movie "Harvey" and think he is crazy. The film is a little slow but it is in line with the main character trying to find himself. An interesting note is that my grandfather says this is realistic for Glasgow Scotland. There were many areas in the city which no available food stores and were only served by food vans who had the monopoly. There were severe rivalries between the truck companies which lead to sabotage.
