Young and Innocent is another early Hitchcock "wrong man" story. It was filmed in 1937 which was two years after "The 39 Steps". It has many of the same story elements. The innocent man helped by a woman to find the guilty person and is pursued by the police.
Unlike "The 39 Steps" and "Saboteur", the woman is not reluctant. One feels that she craves the excitement of adventure.
Other common elements are:
A scene where a character is hanging from a high place like in "Lodger", "Saboteur", "North By Northwest", etc.
Like other innocent man stories, there is a scene where the two main character have to lie to escape. The two main characters are stuck at a kid's birthday. Their act of lovers running away convinces Basil Radford(from "Lady Vanishes") to help them. This is similar to "The 39 Steps" where Hannay has to constantly lie because no one believes the incredible truth.
"Young and Innocent" ends with amazing crane shot where the guilty man is revealed. Just like "Murder!", "Rear Window", "The 39 Steps" and "Sabotage" the reveal is not treated as victory since the guilty person is a pitiful character. It is just a way forward for the two main characters.
