"In the heat of the Night" was a ground breaking film on Race relations. It stars Sidney Poiter as an African-American Homicide detective from the north and Rod Steiger as the racist town sheriff from the south. The racial conflict is set out while investigating a town killing. Poiter also stared in another ground-breaking film called the "Defiant Ones" In it, he is a member of a chain gang and escapes with a racist white prisoner. The plot is totally predictable and an takes way to long to get to the conclusion.
For "In the Heat of the Night", I find the backdrop of a small town not willing to give up its secrets more interesting than just a straight study in race relations.
I also find it admirable that there is a point in the movie where Poiter character is wrong and he admits to his prejudice.
