"Vertigo" Is a unique Hitchcock. It was released in 1958 to mixed reviews. Of course, now is the on the top of Sight and Sound's best movies of all time.
The main hero of the has a dark side. Like the character Jimmy Stewart played in "Rear Window", the audience is unsettled about empathizing with him. In fact, if you examine the movie, you can see parallels between the "good" guy and the "bad" guy. I find that this one of the best aspects of a Hitchcock movie.
