"Insomnia" is a 2002 Christoper Nolan movie based on a 1997 Norwegian movie of the same name.
The narrative plays out pretty straight forward. It is the characters that are complicated. Unlike a Hitchcock movie where the good guys are less likable than the bad guy, characters here are more muddled. Nobody is perfect. In fact, I really like the villain in here. It reminds me of the end of "Rear Window". The "villain" confronts the "hero" and asks him what he wants: "money? I don't have any" The "hero" is not doing it for money or even justice, he is doing it as a distraction to his life. A poor excuse. In "Insomnia", we have a equally pitiful villain who trying to make the best of a bad situation. The direct parallel between the "hero" and villain is not lost. One just happens to have the force of the law on his side.
