"Gilda" is known as one of the ultimate Rita Hayworth movies. I find that sells the movie's co-star, Glen Ford, short. In movies about the battle of the sexes, I have found the war mostly unbalanced. The main star snaps their fingers and the other comes running. I find movies with Femme Fatales particularly dull because it is very predictable echoing the idiot plot. If the guy was not a idiot, the movie would be over.
I have found that Gilda is one of the few battles where it is pretty evenly matched. Glen Ford is a smart hustler "who makes his own luck". Rita Hayworth is a woman who will not be tamed. Neither takes crap from anyone. One of my favorite story points is when it revealed that they knew each other before the movie started and it didn't end well.
I enjoyed everything about this movie. Its story, its acting, its cinematography, and its secondary characters. Balantine is Ford's boss and he is as sharp as Ford is. Uncle Pio is a washroom attendant and is not impressed by anyone.
Interesting to note that Ford and Hayworth starred in another picture called "Affair in Trinidad" and it was very mediocre. Echoes of Casablanca but without the writing. It is yet another example of what I am calling "lightning in a bottle". Successful movie are more than the elements of their parts. One can not base a movie's interest solely based on a director, writer or actor.
